WHAT IS THE TRANSFER PORTAL?

Almost everyone involved in high school or college basketball has heard of the transfer portal over the last two years, but what is it? It has become the method for NCAA athletes to transfer between schools. Beginning in 2018, the portal was created “to help compliance administrators track transfers to better organize the process,” according to the NCAA. It serves as a notification of transfer college coaches and administrators and allows student-athletes to have some control over the process. β€‹

In the past, a transfer required permission from a coach or administrator, but now, student-athletes only have to submit their name to a university compliance administrator to become transfer eligible. The school has two business days to submit the information to the NCAA, via a portal website, after this request is made.

DOES THE TRANSFER PORTAL HAVE A TIMELINE?

This has been a point of contention between the NCAA and its coaches and a change has been made for the 2024-25 season. The Division I Transfer Window is March 17, 2025 - April 30, 2025. β€‹

IS A TRANSFER IMMEDIATELY ELIGIBLE TO PLAY AT THEIR NEW SCHOOL?

In April of 2021, the NCAA created legislation that allowed a one-time transfer between Division I schools without having to sit out for a year, as long as the student-athlete is academically eligible and making progress towards obtaining a degree.
